National Boulevard XMAS Mini
Carnival
Saturday 16th
December, 2006, Campbellfield,
by Paul Logan
Consisting of a 1.7km individual prologue, a criterium and followed
up by a 5 lap handicap was the order of the day, and thankfully
after last weekend's hot weather and furious northerly winds
Melbourne served up a beautiful sunny 20 deg for the event.
In A grade the prologue was taken out by Shane Miller (Haw) with a
sensational time of 1min 54.9s assisted by a tailwind averaging over
53km/h. Shane smashed his fellow A/B graders by over 12 sec.
This effort was incredible considering the short distance. Aaron
Christensen continued his
great Bright form coming in second with 2 min 8s. Coming
in third was Phil Smith.
Alex Marcheese took out C grade with a time of 2 min 17.9s.
And in D grade Gary Whalley as starting first riderroad a
sensational time of 2min 14s to take out D grade and finish in 5th
out of the entire field.
The riders were then given a brief rest before a criterium. In A/B
grade, Miller made the first big attack which had many of the riders
really struggling to hang onto the furious pace. However,
Christensen refused to let Miller use his time trial skills to get
away and was doing some massive turns into the head wind to peg him
back each time. Once Miller was caught then Phil Smith (Cob) would
have a go however none of these efforts were successful. However,
as the pace lulled again Pete Knight (St Kilda) put in a big effort
and managed to get a good gap on the field. Once again it was up to
Miller and Christensen to chase with Tom McDonough managing to go
with them. Towards the end it was down to 4 with Christensen
managing to turn the tables on Miller in the charge to the line.
Knight picked up 3rd with McDonough 4th.
C Grade would all manage to stick together for the entire 45min with
no one being allowed to escape and was taken out by Sunbury's Eric
Thomson. With the minor places going to Thomson's club mate
Chris Hitchen and the rapidly improving and bound for B grade Mark
Ukotic (Macedon)
D Grade was a race of attrition and was taken out narrowly by
Coburg's
Kon Papkonstantou over Whalley and first time racer John Murazak
(Footscray). Lorraine Meinke (Brunswick) rode strongly to
finish with the bunch and claim first woman.
Another 15min rest was the order before a 5 lap (8.8km) handicap.
Caitlin Chancellor and Anthony Farrugia were given a start of 2min
20 over scratch and were off first followed by Meinke and
Murazak At 2min. From there small bunches of 3 - 5 were sent off at
1min 40, 50sec, 30sec, 15sec and lastly thanks to his time trial
effort Shane Miller was off scratch on his own. Early on limit and
2nd limit combined and were working very well and looked very likely
to hold off the field, however it was not long before scratch, 2nd
and 3rd scratch combined and with Miller doing some massive turns on
the front had all the outmarkers in sight. With 1 lap to go the
outmarkers were still holding off scratch but only just and it
looked like the catch was inevitable but with only 800m to go. In
the sprint to the line Steve
Carlton, one of the middle markers managed to grab scratch's wheel
however Christensen got the jump with only 200m remaining, however
Miller would not lay down and in a desperate lunge for the line got
the win by a whisker. Steve Carlton held on for third, ahead of
Coburg's Ian McGinley in his first C Grade race.

The format proved a great hit with the riders and as a result Coburg
may organise similar events starting early February. Stay tuned and
check the website regularly. A big thank you should go to Wayne
Gebert, Jamie Hanson, Simon Perry, Gary Jennings and Marcus Speed
for official duties on the day.
