National Boulevard Criterium

Chris Horner (Sunbury) won Saturday's criterium at National
Boulevarde,
with some great tactical riding.
C and B grades were combined and visiting Hamilton rider Gary
Pollack was
insisting on making it a hard race for all with an early attack
after five
minutes. The bunch was content to give him a 100m lead for two
laps, with
the whole bunch rolling through before reeling him in. Pollack put
in a
few more attacks, later in the race, with the bunch not giving him
more
than a one hundred meter gap. With five laps to go the Sunbury duo
of
Eric Thompson and Chris Horner opened up a 400 metre gap. The bunch
hesitated leaving Mel Humphries-Grey (Northcote) having to decide to
go
with the Sunbury duo or sit up and wait for the bunch. The
Northcote
rider made the decision to wait and with Pollack the two riders did
the
majority of the chasing. Two laps to go and the Sunbury riders still
had a
commanding lead, with Pollack doing the majority of the work. With
one to
go though the bunch was all together. The race pace slackened to
under
30km/h as riders jockeyed for position with all eyes on Pollack.
Horner
and Grey had a 10m gap coming into the last corner, with the bunch
still
marking Pollack. Horner and Grey jumped with the gap and Pollack
lead the
chase but dropped his chain, McDonough made a late charge but the
gap was
too big to close.
Kon Papakonstantinou (Coburg) won his first criterium of the season,
beating Mark Johnson (Melton) and Lorraine Meinke (Brunswick).
Thanks to Simon Perry and former member Darren Collier for helping
out on
the day. Darren saw the photo spread in the Moreland paper and has
decided to come out of a 5 year retirement!!
