Jim Fawcett ( ???? - 1987)

Jim Fawcett took up cycling in his early 30s after a successful football career in the VFA with Preston, which included winning a club
best and fairest, and an equally successful district cricket career.

During his time in cycling, Jim was a huge contributor at both the Preston and Coburg Cycling Clubs and was instrumental in getting
criterium racing going on a Saturday afternoons at Essendon Airport.

In 1985 Jim won the Melbourne-to-Yarrawonga. The win typified the man - he rode off a middle mark, never missing a turn and spent the final
30km with one rider sitting on his wheel, unwilling to work.  Undeterred he pressed on and took out the sprint in what was a popular
victory.

Sadly Jim was killed when he was hit by a bus whilst training on the morning of 1 April 1987. He left behind a wife, two teenage sons and
three young daughters.

He was the reason I took up cycling and is one of the best human beings I've ever met.

Tour of the Southern Grampians

The Tour of the Southern Grampians was held over the weekend, and again was a huge success.  Results, reports and photos will be available shortly at the Coleraine Tour website.

Congratulations to Darren Lapthorne who finished 2nd behind Jason Hegert in A grade.  Other notable performances:

  • Stuart Morgan 7th B grade

  • Wayne Gebert 1st Stage 3 D grade and 8th Overall GC

Well done once again to Tour Organiser and Coburg Treasurer Paul Logan, without whose endless hours of time and effort the Tour would not be such a success.  Thanks to all members of the Coburg Committee for their assistance, and everyone else who helped out in the lead up to the race and on the day.
