Club Championships

Fred McNamara Perpetual Trophy
Darren Lapthorne won the 2004 edition of the Coburg Cycling Club
Road
Championships at Lancefield in testing conditions. The race started
in
dry conditions on the Lancefield circuit and the riders stayed
together
for the first 15km before an attack was made by John Marcan
(Sunbury).
Christine Foster (St Kilda), Steve Knight (St Kilda), Aaron
Christiansen and Nicholas Deane all got away at some stage on the
first lap but
where never more than 10 seconds in front.
The first serious move of the day came when Simon Bristow (Carnegie)
got away on the Rochford climb. Darren Lapthorne launched a counter
attack and rode across to Bristow. At the start finish line on the
first
lap, Lapthorne had a 10 second lead on the rest of the 20 strong
field.
Christiansen road across at the 35km mark, but Lapthorne was content
to
drop back into the bunch. The slow in pace saw Marcan again attack
and
build a 15 second lead.
Turning left at Cobaw Sam Bach and Darren Lapthorne both got away
from
the tiring bunch and built a commanding lead on the rest of the
bunch.
Lapthorne and Bach built up a comfortable lead and were never caught
with the duo finishing 1st and 2nd. Adrian Hanson lead home the big
bunch
for 3rd to continue his steady progress over the past few months.
