2002 Coburg
Club Championships
24 degrees and 30 knot
winds made the conditions pleasant yet challenging!
Starting from the Monegeta General Store, riders set off with a tail
wind.
A couple of riders were dropped in the cross winds approaching
Daraweit
Guim. With most of the bunch still together after the sharp hill at
Daraweit Guim, Garry Clively powered up the following hill. Carl
Cubitt
and Adrian Hanson managed to hang on. Working well, the trio
established
a considerable lead over the chasing riders.
Hanson was tailed off as Clively surged at the start of the daunting
climb that literally goes 'straight up'! Hanson dug deep into his
reserves in an attempt to regain
the leading duo, but struggled in the formidable head wind.
Charles Hardy and Ian Van-Driel, working together and eventually
caught
and then dropped Hanson on the final climb on the way into Romsey.
Hardy's climbing superiority was evident and by the top of the
climb,
Van-Driel was some 100m behind Hardy.
Clively and Cubitt maintained a solid pace, with both riders
watching
each other closely awaiting a suprise attack.
In a gallant ride, Van-Driel fought back and caught Hardy on the
approach to Monegeeta.
Riding at 55kph the leading duo were caught by surprise at the final
corner. The riders knew the finish was 400m from the corner even
though
they couldn't see it in the distance. Clively put an end to the cat
and
mouse tactics and launched an all out attack for the checkered flag.
In
an exciting sprint, Cubitt had the stronger legs and took out the
2002
Coburg Club Championships.
